This scam is a variation on the “send me your bank information” phishing scam.

What you’ll find is a job posting for some position that looks very legitimate. When you e-mail the poster that you are interested, they then e-mail you a “job application” that also looks pretty real. The exception is that the application requires you to enter your credit scores from each of the three major reporting bureaus. (that should set off alarm bells for most people). In an effort of being helpful, it says in the application that if you need help getting your credit scores to go to a particular website.

The website also looks professional, but it is nothing more than a phishing site to get your personal information.

I know you’ve heard it before, but never give out personal information online. Also remember that employers don’t need you to provide your credit scores, they can get it themselves by running a credit check on you.

By the way, when you do a domain search on both the e-mail address of the “employer” and the domain name of the credit score website, they are both registered to the same person…. Hmmmm

Several years ago, congress, in their infinite wisdom, passed a law which enabled the producers of SPAM, or UCE (Unsolicited Commercial E-mail) to be held liable for sending crap to our e-mail boxes. Out of legislation, several websites sprung up that teach you how to do this. If you type “how to sue a spammer” into Googles search box, you will most likely see a link to http://www.angryox.com/vaspam/. The author lists several “steps” to take to sue the people who send you SPAM. There are several other sites as well such as www.suespammers.net

Don’t believe a word of this

Apparently, the law is really written for Internet Service Providers. In a story by PC World, one of these people making a living suing Spammers has to pony up $111,000 in legal fees for the defendants. The story, in part says:

..the court ruled against [the plaintiff], saying that he and other recipients of spam have no standing under the federal CAN-SPAM Act because they have not been “adversely affected” within the meaning of the law. The court said the recipient of the spam must be adversely affected in the same way that an Internet service provider would be, meaning he would have problems such as network and bandwidth slowdowns, greater demands on personnel or require new equipment.

So before you start getting lawsuit happy, you had better make sure that you can prove real damage done. Judges are becoming more critical of this practice and they don’t like their time wasted by people just making a living off the legal system.

If you’re reading this on my facebook profile, you’ll have to click on the link below that says, “view original post”. Check it out and let me know what you think. I’m rather chuffed with myself.

6 months from now I’ll be sick of this one and I’ll change it again.

Can you imagine what I would be like with a tattoo that would last forever?

OK, this post is mostly just a note to myself to remind me of how I got this thing working. If I ever need to do it again, then I’ll have my notes here on my trusty blog.

My services is through AT&T and for the most part it is pretty reliable. Last week the modem started intermittently loosing connection. If I unplugged it for a couple of hours, then it would start to work again. Of course, as time went on, it became more frequent. So, AT&T sent me a new one under warranty and I hooked it up last night.

The problem is this: I have residential DSL service which is designed for one modem hooked up to one computer. And while the terms of service allow for multiple computers in the same home to use the connection, they don’t provide technical support for how to do it. Since I have one part time and three full time computers hooked up, plus two network printers, it gets to be quite a trick to make everything work right.

OK, here are the settings changes that made all this possible.

Change the router settings from Automatic DHCP to PPPoE.

Add username and password from ISP in the appropriate fields

Make sure that the subnet is different from the DSL modem. For example, my modem defaults to 192.168.1.xxx. So I changed the router to be on 192.168.2.xxx.

In the modem setup, change the PPP mode to “Bridged PPPoE”. Now they are going to warn you that you won’t be able to access the modem setup without a direct Ethernet cable connection, but that is what you want.

At this point, you should be connected, if not, go the status page of your router and see if you are connected. Mine listed all IP addresses as zero’s, but there was a button called “Connect” which I pressed and voila – connected to the internet.

You wouldn’t think this, but I had to shut down all computers and restart them. I didn’t restart the network printers though, they seemed to work fine without any problem.

Hopefully this is enough information to keep myself out of trouble if this ever happens again.

I clicked a link to go to the Dallas Morning News website earlier this morning and their ad server gave me a page called Antivirus 2009. The URL was: http://onlinescannersite9.com/2009/1/freescan…. (more after here, but don’t click it). There was some pretty realistic flash videos that simulated a virus scan on my computer, even though I picked the box to ignore. When the flash video was done, it popped up the following window:

To the average person, this would look pretty authentic. But it is a fake. You can pick “Remove All” or “Ignore”. The third option is to just close the window by clicking the red “X” in the top right of the window. No matter what you do, a file download is initiated with the file name A9installer_77011808.exe which I suspect is the virus/trojan. The virus sites don’t have any searchable pages with this file name, but I’m guessing that they will soon enough.

The domain is registered in Keiv, Russia.

If you see this, don’t open the file. I haven’t researched is further since I have a real job that I need to work at to pay the bills and don’t have unlimited searching time, but I suspect that an automatic file download from Keiv is not what you want on your machine. I don’t care how tempted you are to open it.

A while back, I used to operate a web store that, frankly, didn’t do that well. But while I was in business, I used RingCentral
for my phone system. I have to tell you that it was totally awesome.

Since I was almost never at my desk, I set up the service to call my cell phone whenever a customer called. I published my 800 number on my website, and when people called the 800 number, they heard a message thanking them for calling and they were locating someone to help them. In the mean time, my cell phone rang and told me that a customer was on the line and would I like to take the call. If I didn’t take the call, the customer heard a new message that said all representatives were busy and could they leave a voice mail.

This service was so slick, that it made you look like a big time company to the customers, when all I operated out of was my cell phone. You could have free fax numbers, voice mail, and multiple departments to.

So even though my store didn’t end up doing that well in the long run, the phone system was fantastic.

OK, we all know and love SPAM and we even get a few laughs from the old Nigerian scam as well as the ‘you won $300,000,000′ e-mail. However, the following e-mail arrived on one of the e-mail servers that I administer:

Hello

I am very sorry for you Xxxxxx, is a pity that this is how your life is going to end as soon as you don’t comply. As you can see there is no need of introducing myself to you because I don’t have any business with you, my duty as I am mailing you now is just to KILL you and I have to do it as I have already been paid for that. Someone you call a friend wants you Dead by all means, and the person have spent a lot of money on this, the person also came to us and told me that he wanted you dead and he provided us with your name ,picture and other necessary information’s we needed about you. So I sent my boys to track you down and they have carried out the necessary investigation needed for the operation on you, and they have done that but I told them not to kill you that I will like to contact you and see if your life is Important to you or not since their findings shows that you are innocent. I called my client back and ask him of your email address which I didn’t tell him what I wanted to do with it and he gave it to me and I am using it to contact you now. As I am writing to you now my men are monitoring you and they are telling me everything about you.

Now do you want to LIVE OR DIE? As someone has paid us to kill you. Get back to me now if you are ready to pay some fees to spare your life, $15,000 is all you need to spend You will first of all pay $8,000 then I will send a tape to you which i recoeded every discusion i hade with the person who wanted you dead and as soon as you get the tape, you will pay the remaining $7,000. If you are not ready for my help, then I will carry on with my job straight-up. WARNING: DO NOT THINK OF CONTACTING THE POLICE OR EVEN TELLING ANYONE BECAUSE I WILL KNOW.REMEMBER, SOMEONE WHO KNOWS YOU VERY WELL WANT YOU DEAD! I WILL EXTEND IT TO YOUR FAMILY, INCASE I NOTICE SOMETHING FUNNY. DO NOT COME OUT ONCE IT IS 7:PM UNTIL I MAKE OUT TIME TO SEE YOU AND GIVE YOU THE TAPE OF MY DISCUSSION WITH THE PERSON WHO WANT YOU DEAD THEN YOU CAN USE IT TO TAKE ANY LEGAL ACTION. GOOD LUCK AS I AWAIT YOUR REPLY VIA
Email: (e-mail address at gmail)

I have to say that I didn’t laugh at this one. I traced the e-mail back to a mail server in Mexico, but couldn’t dig up any useful information on it. Weird thing was that there was very little information forged the header. Either they are really stupid about that, or they aren’t afraid of being found out in a foreign country.

We have called our local police and filed a report and have also notified google that the gmail address they are using is for criminal purposes. Not that google will do anything about it. The police say that although a crime has been commited, there is no way to identify the criminal at this point, so that will be dead end.

So if any of you get this, don’t worry about it. You don’t have any friends that are willing to pay good money to knock you off.
