New Craigslist Scam

Posted on | February 11, 2009 | Comments Off

This scam is a variation on the “send me your bank information” phishing scam.

What you’ll find is a job posting for some position that looks very legitimate. When you e-mail the poster that you are interested, they then e-mail you a “job application” that also looks pretty real. The exception is that the application requires you to enter your credit scores from each of the three major reporting bureaus. (that should set off alarm bells for most people). In an effort of being helpful, it says in the application that if you need help getting your credit scores to go to a particular website.

The website also looks professional, but it is nothing more than a phishing site to get your personal information.

I know you’ve heard it before, but never give out personal information online. Also remember that employers don’t need you to provide your credit scores, they can get it themselves by running a credit check on you.

By the way, when you do a domain search on both the e-mail address of the “employer” and the domain name of the credit score website, they are both registered to the same person…. Hmmmm
