Monster Parents

Posted on | June 11, 2008 | 1 Comment

I was reflecting on this recent story about a group of parents in Japan that forced the school to make every person in the play have the lead role – Snow White. Now isn’t that just great. You go to the play with the intent of seeing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But instead, you get 25 Snow Whites, no Dwarfs, no bad witch, and not even a prince to rescue all 25 of the Snow Whites.

This is just shameful.

Why do we as a society put up with such irresponsible behavior from such narcissistic people. Have we lost our respect and maturity to this point, that we would mob the teachers?

This quote explains part of it:

“The monsters [parents] are created in family restaurants and coffee shops — places where the mothers meet each other to talk and relax,” said Professor Morotomi. “Simple chats spiral into ‘emergency meetings’… the conversation becomes more emotional and radical and suddenly what began as a simple complaint becomes a monsterised army of parents.”

I hope that I would have the saltiness to stand up to such a mob, nevertheless, a group of more mature parents should be able to go to battle here.

I refuse to accept that this is a majority of people. I hope I’m right.

Just think, if you were the only parent insisting your kid be a dwarf or wicked witch, then the tables would turn because your child would be the one who stood out in a room full of Snow White’s. So if you really want to be a star, never follow the crowd.
